Google Launches Axion Edge: Custom AI Silicon for On-Device Multimodal Assistants

Introduction

On May 22, 2025, Google quietly launched Axion Edge, a stripped-down variant of its Axion custom AI processor designed for smart home hubs, AR glasses, and enterprise wearables. Axion Edge builds on Google’s work with Gemini Nano, offering low-latency inference for vision, language, and audio tasks on-device.

“This is AI with sovereignty and presence,” said Rick Osterloh, SVP of Devices & Services.¹ “With Axion Edge, we’ve brought Gemini-class capabilities to the palm of your hand—no cloud, no lag.”

The chip features fused transformer engines and Google’s dedicated MTPU (Multimodal TPU), enabling token-level fusion of image, text, and ambient audio streams in under 200 ms. It consumes under 1W, making it viable for always-on scenarios in mobile and industrial settings.

OEMs, especially in healthcare and field services, can integrate Gemini-based assistants directly into form factors that previously relied on tethered phones or cloud calls. Google’s inclusion of vector quantization accelerators also supports efficient retrieval-based answering from local memory stores.

Developers can now deploy AI that’s private, ambient, and responsive—ideal for regulated sectors and low-connectivity geographies. Expect adoption in smart glasses, industrial sensors, and even badge-style enterprise wearables.

Looking ahead

Axion Edge chips are already sampling with partners including Bosch, Ray-Ban, and Garmin. Google plans full SDK release by July 2025, including fine-tuning hooks for vertical applications in retail, healthcare, and logistics.

Gartner projects that by 2029, 40% of wearable AI will be powered by purpose-built silicon with multimodal offline inference category currently dominated by smartphone SoCs.
